Why Tooth Extraction Is Not Always The Best Option

With today’s modern and advanced root canal therapy procedures, most would agree that tooth extraction should always be a last resort type procedure. This is especially important to consider in light of the fact that tooth extraction can cause a wide variety of negative effects. For example, in some cases tooth extraction can actually cause nerve damage. Long lasting numbness associated with tooth extraction can be present in the lips, chin or other parts of the face.

A More Reliable Option

While nerve damage of this nature may often repair itself over time, this is a much unwanted side effect tooth extraction. In addition, in some extreme or rare cases jaw fracture can actually occur as a result of tooth extraction. While this is typically more common in older patients, it is a concern when contemplating having tooth extraction performed as opposed to a more reliable option like root canal therapy. Equally of concern when having a tooth extracted is that of infection. This is typically caused by bacteria or trapped food particles migrating into the hole that is left as a result of tooth extraction.

Bleeding Is Noted In The Extraction Site

Any time a fever, pain or swelling is experienced, it is important to seek out medical help as soon as possible following a tooth extraction. Another clear sign that something is amiss following a tooth extraction is when drainage or bleeding is noted in the extraction site. In many cases an antibiotic regiment will cause the infection to subside over time. Along with these unwanted effects associated with tooth extraction, blood clots can form and general jaw and joint pain can be experienced as a result of the procedure.
