Understanding The Importance Of Endodontics
Considered a highly specialized segment of dentistry, endodontics addresses issues related to diseases of the dental pulp as well as the supporting structures. An endodontist is a dentist, but with special and specific postgraduate education. The main purpose of this specialized training is to ensure that an endodontist is able to identify the cause of oral and facial pain that may otherwise be difficult to diagnose. In many instances a general dental care provider will refer a patient to an endodontist for endodontic treatment.
The Human Tooth Has Several Layers
In many cases the endodontist will use advanced technological equipment such as a dental microscope along with 3D imaging to facilitate root canal therapy or treatment. Keep in mind that the human tooth has several layers including an outside layer that is known as the enamel. The inner layer of the tooth is referred to as the dentin while the soft center tissue is called the pulp. The pulp is the main concern of the endodontist. This is where nerves, blood vessels as well as connective tissue are located.
Nourishment Provided By Surrounding Tissue
One key distinction with regard to the tooth pulp is that it is primarily needed during the early developmental stages of growth of the tooth. Endodontic treatment or root canal therapy is effective simply due to the fact that even when the root or pulp is removed the tooth can continue to thrive through nourishment provided by surrounding tissue. Root canal therapy or endodontic treatment is often implemented as a way to deal with deep cavities, cracked teeth, and teeth that have been exposed to repeated dental procedures. In addition, trauma to a tooth may require endodontic care. Contact your dental care provider in Houston for more information on endodontic treatment.
